What is the difference between a glass lined reactor and a stainless steel reactor?

1、Differences in material essence and structure
1.Glass lined reactor:metal substrate+glass glaze layer

The enamel reactor is made of carbon steel or low-alloy steel as the substrate,and a layer of glass glaze with a thickness of 0.8-2.0mm is covered on the metal surface through high-temperature sintering process.This composite structure combines the mechanical strength of metals with the chemical stability of glass,forming a unique"combination of rigidity and flexibility"characteristic.The main components of the glass glaze layer are silicon dioxide,boron trioxide,etc.,and a balance of acid resistance,alkali resistance,and organic solvent resistance is achieved through proportioning.

2.Stainless steel reactor:single metal material
Stainless steel reactors are usually made of austenitic stainless steel or duplex steel such as 304 and 316L,and their corrosion resistance comes from the dense chromium oxide protective film formed on the surface.316L stainless steel has become the mainstream choice in the chemical industry due to its superior pitting corrosion resistance in chloride containing environments with the addition of 2%-3%molybdenum.

Glass lined:The glass glaze layer of the glass lined reactor has corrosion resistance to most acids,bases,salts,and organic solvents,especially suitable for highly corrosive media.Its corrosion resistance does not significantly decrease with increasing temperature and can operate stably within the range of-50℃to 200℃.
Stainless steel:It exhibits excellent performance in oxidizing acids,but is prone to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in reducing acids,high-temperature strong alkalis,or chlorine containing environments.
2.Mechanical properties:the"toughness"of stainless steel and the"fragility"of enamel glass
Stainless steel:with a tensile strength of 520-750MPa and an elongation of≥35%,it can withstand high pressure and severe mechanical stirring.Its thermal conductivity is much higher than that of enamel glass,making it suitable for processes that require rapid heating/cooling.
Glass lined:The glass glaze layer of the glass lined reactor has high hardness but high brittleness,with an impact strength of only 0.2-0.5 J/cm²,and it is necessary to avoid collisions with hard objects.Its poor thermal conductivity makes it difficult to control temperature uniformity,but it can be optimized through jacket design.
3.Cleaning and Maintenance:The"Easy Cleanliness"Advantage of Glass Lining
Glass lined reactor:The surface of the glass lined reactor is smooth,pore free,and not easy to adsorb media.It meets GMP/FDA cleaning standards and is suitable for the production of high-purity products.Minor scratches can be temporarily repaired with specialized repair agents.
Stainless steel:Surface roughness is prone to residual media and requires regular pickling and passivation maintenance.After long-term use,local corrosion may occur due to damage to the oxide film.
Glass lined reactors and stainless steel reactors are like the"yin and yang"in the field of chemical equipment,each carrying unique values.With the advancement of materials science,new composite materials are breaking through traditional boundaries,but the current selection still needs to return to the essential requirements of the process.In the future,with the application of 3D printing technology and intelligent monitoring systems,reactors will evolve towards"customization+intelligence",and the core logic of material selection-finding optimal solutions between performance,cost,and reliability-will remain unchanged.
